Flowers are a Valentine's Day staple... as is seeing Riggs and me at The Library Club tomorrow night, but that's a different story.

Here's the Cliff Notes version:

  • Every year for 46 years, John Johnston bought his wife Sue flowers on Valentine's Day.
  • John passed away two years ago in April.
  • 10 months after death, Sue gets flowers on Valentines's Day from a guy named "John."
Here's where it gets SUPER interesting/sweet.
When she thought she was the victim of some cruel joke, Sue called the florist to inquire about the flowers:
“I called the florist to say there had been a mistake,” Johnston explained. “The florist replied, ‘No, ma’am, it’s not a mistake. Before he passed away, your husband prepaid for many years and asked us to guarantee that you’d continue getting bouquets every Valentine’s Day.’ With my heart in my throat, I hung up the phone and read the attached card. It said, ‘My love for you is eternal.’”
Damn, dude. You win Valentine's Day.
